Book - Quotes
We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year`s Day.
I hope no one reading this book thinks that "The exception proves the rule" means that if you have an exception, it means the rule is true. That`s just bugnutty. I had it explained to me as "The exception tests the rule." Also not true. The exception does not test the rule - it disproves the rule.
When I sit down to write a book, I do not say to myself, `I am going to produce a work of art`. I write it because there is some lie that I want to expose, some fact to which I want to draw attention, and my initial concern is to get a hearing.
Tell a devout Christian that his wife is cheating on him, or that frozen yogurt can make a man invisible, and he is likely to require as much evidence as anyone else, and to be persuaded only to the extent that you give it. Tell him that the book he keeps by his bed was written by an invisible deity who will punish him with fire for eternity if he fails to accept its every incredible claim about the universe, and he seems to require no evidence what so ever.
Who is more humble? The scientist who looks at the universe with an open mind and accepts whatever the universe has to teach us, or somebody who says "Everything in this book must be considered the literal truth and never mind the fallibility of all the human beings involved in the writing of this book."?
Every person is a book with thousands of pages and on each lies an irreparable truth.
We don`t need anyone to tell us what to do. We are free to follow our own path. There is no book, or teacher to give you the answers, show you the pass. Choose your own way!
No one who can read, ever looks at a book, even unopened on a shelf, like one who cannot.
There`s no trouble in this world so serious that it can`t be cured with a hot bath, a glass of whiskey, and the Book of Common Prayer.
